Binding a hardcover book can seem like a difficult task best left to a skilled craftsman, but with a little practice, you will be able to do it with a level of ease. The first time you attempt to make a hardcover book binding you may make a mistake or two, so it is a smart idea to practice by using leftover materials. Once you have the technique mastered you can bind a well-loved book and make it as good as new.
Things You'll Need
- Scissors
- Glue
- Cardboard
- Fabric
- Sponge
Instructions
1.
Choose the paper you want to use for your binding your book. Use paper of a similar size and weight to any book that you plan to bind in the future. Any paper will do if you are making a book from scratch.
2.
Arrange the paper in piles of eight sheets and fold each pile in half. Each sheet makes four pages so a pile of eight sheets will make 32 pages. Divide the number of pages you want the finished book to contain by 32 to determine how may piles you need.
3.
Take one pile of paper, unfold it and staple along the fold line from the outside in with the staple gun. Insert three staples in each pile, one in the middle and two at each end approximately half an inch from the edge. Fold each pile in half -- along the fold just stapled -- and arrange them on top of each other. The stacked piles should now resemble a book without its cover.
4.
Cut the fabric so that its length is equal to the width of the paper you are using. Trim the width of the fabric so that is twice the thickness of the stacked pages when they are pressed together firmly.
5.
Hold the folder paper tightly together and, with the other hand, spread the glue along the folded edge that will make the spine of the book. Apply glue to the edge of what will be the front and back pages on the spine side. Do not spread any glue further than half an inch from the fold of the spine.
6.
Press the fabric along the spine making sure it is exactly in the center. Fold the excess material over the front and back pages and press firmly into the glue. Remove any excess glue with a dry sponge.
7.
Cut two pieces of cardboard each the same size as the other to make the front and back covers. Each piece should be slightly larger than the bound pages by 1/8 inch at the top and bottom and the open page edge. Cut some cardboard to the width of the spine and the same length as the two covers.
8.
Layout your chosen fabric with the best side facing down. This will become the final outer cover of your book. Apply glue to the back of each piece of cardboard and press the cardboard pieces to the fabric arranged with the spine piece in the middle and the two cover pieces either side. Each piece of card should not touch the other but should be no more than 1/16 of an inch apart. Turn the fabric over and smooth out any air bubbles with a clean sponge.
9.
Trim the fabric so that it overlaps the cardboard by 1/4 of an inch. Apply glue to the inside edge of the cardboard cover along each edge and pull the fabric tight before folding and pressing into the glue. Close the cover and allow to dry for two hours.
10.
Place the bound pages into the cover to ensure that everything fits together then remove them. Apply glue to the fabric spine of the pages press firmly into the inner spine of the hard cover. Close the book and place on a flat surface. Place a heavy weight -- two or three telephone directories will do -- on the cover to hold the book tightly closed and leave overnight to dry.
